In a study of bio- material vascularization for bone regeneration, the release of the pro- inflammatory cytokine interferon-γ (IFN-γ) from decellularized bone scaffolds caused M1 polarization of seeded human macrophages in vitro, as measured by gene expression and protein secretion of a variety of pro-inflammatory markers, and resulted in increased vascularization in a murine subcutaneous implantation model [98].
